What Are Hemp Bricks?
Hemp bricks (also referred to as pre-cast hempcrete blocks) are a sustainable, lightweight masonry product crafted from the chopped inner woody core of industrial hemp plants (known as the hurd or shiv), combined with a hydrated lime-based binder and water.
Unlike traditional concrete or clay bricks that rely on high-heat kilns, hemp blocks cure naturally over time. During growth and curing, the material absorbs significant amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide, rendering it a carbon-negative structural infill material.
Structural Note: Hemp bricks are non-load-bearing insulation blocks. In Australian residential construction, they are laid around a load-bearing sub-frame, typically timber or steel, to form the exterior and interior wall envelopes.

Key Benefits of Hemp Bricks
Hemp bricks offer several key performance benefits over conventional construction materials:
-
Exceptional Thermal Performance: Hemp blocks boast high thermal resistance (R-values ranging from R2.5 to over R6 depending on block thickness), drastically reducing summer heat gain and winter heat loss.
-
Vapour Permeability ("Breathable" Walls): The material naturally regulates internal indoor humidity between 50% and 55%. This prevents internal condensation, deters mould growth, and creates a healthier indoor air quality profile.
-
High Fire Resistance: The lime binder calcifies the hemp hurd, providing natural fire resistance. Hemp block systems easily achieve high Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) ratings up to BAL-FZ, making them suitable for Australia’s bushfire-prone landscapes.
-
Acoustic Insulation: Due to their porous cellular structure, hemp blocks offer natural acoustic absorption, suppressing low-frequency vibrations and airborne noise.
-
Pest and Termite Resistance: The high lime content creates a mineralised, alkaline environment that naturally repels termites, pests, and rodents.
Price Point Comparison
While raw wall-system supply costs for hemp bricks are slightly higher than basic clay brick veneer, installation efficiency and long-term energy savings soften the overall price difference.
| Cost Component | Standard Clay Bricks | Hempcrete Blocks / Bricks |
| Material Supply | ~$80 – $100 per m² | ~$105 – $330+ per m² (varies by block thickness) |
| Installation / Labour | ~$80 – $120 per m² | ~$65 per m² (faster, lightweight assembly) |
| Finishing | None required (unless rendered) | Breathable lime render / sealers (~$100 per m²) |
| Operational Impact | Standard energy consumption | Up to 70% reduction in heating/cooling costs |
Note: Material prices vary based on thickness (e.g., 80mm internal partitions vs. 300mm high-performance external envelopes), freight, and site location.

Existing Residential Hemp Buildings in NSW
New South Wales hosts an increasing number of landmark residential builds utilizing hemp masonry systems (both cast-in-situ and pre-cast blocks):
-
Chester Hill Hemp House (Sydney Suburbs): Demonstrating that hemp masonry is not just for rural acreage, this home built on a standard suburban quarter-acre block in Sydney's west incorporates thick hemp walls finished with external lime render and off-form internal hemp features.
-
Narara Ecovillage Homes (Central Coast): This intentional sustainable community on the NSW Central Coast features multiple custom-designed homes using hempcrete and hemp block systems designed for high thermal and bushfire performance.
-
Hazo Hempcrete House (South Coast): Built following the Black Summer bushfires on the NSW South Coast, this home illustrates hemp’s resilience in high Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) zones.
-
Northern Rivers Sustainable Mansion (Byron Bay Region): Hollywood actor Zac Efron’s off-grid project designed by Joost Bakker features one of the most comprehensive residential applications of industrial hemp materials in regional NSW.
It's said that there are over 25,000 uses for hemp. (Photo: Instagram @joostbakker)
